Afsha Merchant, LPC

My name is Afsha Merchant, and I’ve been a therapist and life coach for 6 years. My interest in my familyโ€™s struggles sparked my passion for this work. I’ve learned that our biggest challenges often come from within.

I aim to help people find their strengths and navigate lifeโ€™s challenges.

Therapize Me is based on compassion, understanding, and the idea that all humans can grow and change for the better. I have worked with families, young adults, parents, and trauma survivors to improve relationships and reduce unwanted mental health symptoms such as depression, anxiety, hypervigilance and so much more. I have worked with people from various backgrounds, affluent and people with high financial struggles.

Whether it be working with teenagers or children with Autism, adults with busy lives and balancing career with family life, or even young adults transitioning from high school to college, I support people in finding their own voices and help build on their own strengths that may have not been seen for most of one’s life.

I specialize in working with people of color (primarily South Asian and Latinx) who are struggling with several mental health symptoms including acculturation, dual identity, family conflict, couples work and overall symptoms that make it hard to function in life. Luckily, I am fluent in Spanish, Hindi/Urdu, and English if you are multilingual and prefer to speak in your native tongue.

What’s so unique and different about my style, you ask?

Good question!

I utilize body based techniques in my coaching and therapy space. I specialize in DBT, CBT, and couples therapy. What “body based therapy” means is, we don’t just talk about what’s bothering you, we actually work to heal and overcome it. And no this isn’t me saying in 6 months, you will be healed…this is me saying this takes work…time, investment, and mostly practice. An hour long session once a week wont cut it…but your dedication and commitment to the work will definitly do you justice.

So are you READY to take this leap of faith with me?

Our specialities include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Somatic therapy

See What Our Clients Think

Going to a therapist was difficult for me in the beginning. I was worried about feeling judged, however when I entered her office, I felt like I could finally let my guard down. I like that she is from my desi culture so I donโ€™t have to explain all the nuances to her, especially my first generation upbringing

R.P.

I felt heard and seen. Finally someone that understands me and listens to me. She uses humor and tries to understand my upbringing before making any assumptions.

At first when I heard about therapy, I didnโ€™t know what to expect. I really didnโ€™t think it would help me, but when I started working with her, my relationships started improving, as well as my communication. I used to talk with lots of passive aggression and my partner and me would get into many arguments. From therapy, I learned how to calm down my mind and relax those anxious thoughts.
